Group IEP/ELL Plan Project

For this exercise, the class will be split into teams where they will work through the process of developing an English Language Learner Plan—in other words, an Individualized Instructional Plan (or Individual Educational Plan) for an ELL student. Additionally, each person will develop a lesson plan providing the accommodations listed in the Individualized Instructional Plan that the group developed as a team. While similar to a formal 504/508 IEP for a student with special needs, this student does not have a learning disability. Additionally, this student does not meet the full requirements to proceed with accommodations for a formal ELL plan. As with many ELL students, this student “falls in between”. Our goal is to develop an IEP/ELL plan to accommodate this student.

Steps:

  1. Participants read and discuss directions, case files and documentation regarding the case study. Group members sign up for the particular teacher role they plan on representing (Math Teacher, Guidance Counselor, English teacher, etc.)
    • MSDE Accommodations Manual focusing on section 7-8-9 [PDF]
    • Example 1: Ana Directions [Word ... PDF]
    • Example 2: Josh Case Study directions [Word ... PDF]
  2. Together participants design a template so all group members can insert information related to the SETT framework
  3. Each participant inserts information related to the SETT framework
  4. As a group one (1) SETT framework file is submitted consolidating the information submitted by the group members. THIS REQUIRES THE GROUP TO WORK TOGETHER TO COMPILE THE DATA AND ONE GROUP LEADER TO COMPILE THE DATA AND POST THE FILE
  5. Based on the documentation and data files given, each individual creates an organized report (utilizing the data given) that you would take to a planning meeting. This should include the data (grades) and attendance and any student work that was included in the data files. This would be the material you would normally take to a student conference and/or IE/LEP planning meeting
  6. Next, each participant (playing a particular teacher role) submits strategies and suggestions for their classroom. Some have chosen to include this in the beginning and include this in the mini report.
  7. As a group, a decision is made as to which 2-3 strategies/suggestions the team will implement for Ana in their classrooms
    • Example 1 [Word ... PDF]
    • One way a group can come to consensus [Word ... PDF]
  8. Convert the group consensus to an official LEP or IEP plan utilizing one of the IEP/ELL online generators or utilizing your own ELL/IEP plan (a format your school might utilize).
  9. Finally, each person will develop a lesson plan (for their role) implementing the 2-3 strategies the group came to consensus on (based on the IEP/ELL plan)
