Admission:

1. Why do I need to be admitted to the University?

1. Every student wanting to take classes at the University must have an admit standing with the University. All students wishing to earn graduate credit for coursework must be admitted to the Graduate School at the University. The admission process creates a record/file for you at the University so you will be identified as one of our students, and it also provides for some "quality control" in the admission process for our students. In order to qualify for Graduate School and earn graduate credit, you must have already earned an undergraduate degree at an accredited institution.

2. I'm already taking classes through the University of Maryland, must I be admitted again?

2. If you are a current graduate student in good standing at the University of Maryland College Park, you need not be admitted again. If your admission is through another campus of the University of Maryland System, but not through University of Maryland College Park, you WILL need to be admitted to our campus.

3. Under what admit status will I be identified?

3. You are requesting an "Institute" admission status for this coursework. You will not be earning a degree upon completion of this coursework. However, individual departments may allow you to apply these credits to a degree program. .

Credit:

1. Can I earn credit for this course?

1. One-three graduate credits for approved courses can be earned if you are admitted to the University of Maryland Graduate School.

2. If I want to apply this credit to a degree program, will it be accepted?

2. The answer to this question must be given by the program to which you are applying. The coursework is graduate level, but may not "fit" into your future program, so they must decide it's applicability.

Residency:

1. I am not a resident of Maryland, must I pay out-of-state tuition?

1. For this particular program, the out-of-state tuition rate has been waived, but for any other coursework you may pursue at the University of Maryland College Park, you will be classified as non-resident and required to pay non-resident tuition rates.  ALL participants in this coursework will pay the same package rate.

2. I received a "Welcome to the University" letter that says I am a non-Maryland resident for tuition purposes, but you just said that I don’t need to pay non-Maryland resident tuition rates--what gives?

2. For this course ONLY, you will be charged in-state tuition rates under a special exemption, but for any other regular coursework offered through the University, you will be required to pay non-resident tuition rates if you are in fact, not an official resident of the state of Maryland.

Withdrawal/Refund:

1.  I changed my mind about taking the course.  What do I need to do?

1.  If you wish to withdraw from the course and cancel your admission and registration, you must request "Official withdrawal" from a class.  Official withdrawal must be initiated and acknowledged before attendance in the first session (module 1).  This means that either e-mail or written requests must be received before the first session begins.   Students can officially withdraw from a course in any of the following ways:

  1. E-mailing your withdrawal request to  "dpruitt@umd.edu"
  2. Requesting in writing to withdraw from a course or courses. Address withdrawal requests to:  Student Services - Outreach, University of Maryland, 1210 Benjamin Building, College Park, MD 20742.
  3. Fax your request to (301)314-9278.

The postmark on the envelope, or the date and time of the e-mail, or the date and time of the fax, will be the official date of withdrawal.  Withdrawals cannot be accepted over the telephone.   Failure to withdraw in the required manner will result in the forfeiture of any refund and may result in a failing grade.

Stopping payment on checks or canceling credit card payment  does not constitute an official withdrawal or relieve students of financial obligation to the University of Maryland.  Never participating in or never attending  class does not constitute a withdrawal.

The withdrawal request must include your name, student ID number (SS#), address, course information, and signature, plus a contact phone number for the University to use if further confirmation is requested.

Refund for Course Cancellations

UMCP refunds 100 percent of tuition and registration fees for courses cancelled by UMCP.

  • 100% - if dropped the day before the 1st class/module meeting
  • No refunds will be given after the 1st class/module meeting (start date of first module)
